Latvia to Buy 18 Archer 155mm Wheeled Howitzers From Sweden

Latvia has signed a letter of intent with Sweden to procure 18 Archer 8×8 self-propelled artillery systems.

The agreement calls for the Latvian defense industry’s participation in the deal’s supply chain.

Also included is the future creation of a joint Archer 6×6 unit and the joint training of Latvian and Swedish defense personnel.

Further details of the potential deal will be negotiated in the next phase.

Until the delivery, Sweden is expected to lease the BAE Systems wheeled platforms to Latvia.

“The agreement between Sweden and Latvia marks a significant step in closer defense cooperation between the two countries,” Latvian Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds said.

“The agreement provides a solid basis for joint military exercises, soldier training, and the presence of effective artillery systems starting in 2026.

This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to strengthening regional security and deterrence, especially in these geopolitically challenging times.”

Archer Artillery System

In service with the land forces of Sweden, the UK, and Ukraine, the 155mm wheeled platform has been purpose-built for mobility, lethality, and survivability.

The Archer features an armored cabin for crew safety and is mobile enough to scoot from the scene within 30 seconds of firing a round.

It can fire six rounds and move 500 meters (1,640 feet) in less than two minutes, according to the developer.

The system can fire conventional rounds and the BONUS anti-armor and Excalibur precision-guided munitions.

In 2023, the British Army selected the Archer as an interim replacement for the AS90 self-propelled gun, several of which were delivered to Ukraine.
